When I was starting my journey of learning the science of hadith and narrators, I found the following guide from the contemporary rij\u0101li scholar, Sh Mohammad Baqir Malekian very useful. Below is the translation of the guide with my footnotes at the end:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Initial Familiarization
    Over the course of a week to ten days, read 300\u2013400 hadiths \u2014 only their chains of transmission (isn\u0101ds), not the texts.[1]
    Use Wasa\u2019il al-Shi\u2018a as your source. [2]
    Make a list of all the narrators that appear in these hadiths, and memorize about 30\u201340 of the most frequently recurring names.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Basic Evaluations
    Briefly study these 30\u201340 narrators from a rij\u0101l perspective \u2014 just enough to know, for example, \u201cMuhammad b. Muslim is trustworthy,\u201d or \u201cIbn Sin\u0101n is disputed.\u201d
    Each narrator should have a one-word or one-phrase level of information associated with them. [3]<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Foundational Principles
    Alongside step two, learn a summary of the main principles of rij\u0101l.
    A suggested text is Kulliy\u0101t by \u0100yatull\u0101h Subh\u0101n\u012b. [4]
    Read it selectively, just enough to know, for instance, that some scholars consider the teachers of Ibn Ab\u012b \u2018Umayr trustworthy, while others do not.
    You don\u2019t need to study the proofs of each opinion at this stage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Re-examination and Application
    Return to the same 300\u2013400 hadiths from the first step.
    As you encounter the recurring narrators, review your notes on them.
    For the rest of the narrators, try to gain a general understanding using al-Maws\u016b\u2018ah al-Rij\u0101liyya al-Muyassarah by Shaykh Tur\u0101b\u012b. [5]
    At this point, apply the rij\u0101l principles you learned.
    For example: even if a narrator is not explicitly endorsed, since Ibn Ab\u012b \u2018Umayr narrates from him, according to some scholars he is considered trustworthy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Detailed Study of Narrators
    Now study each narrator in detail.
    The book Qabas\u0101t contains a section devoted to key and controversial narrators \u2014 use it as a model.
    For each narrator:
    Start with primary sources.
    Then consult Qabas\u0101t to see how those details are analyzed.
    The book Q\u0101m\u016bs al-Rij\u0101l is also excellent for this purpose.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    You should practice until you can analyze narrators in the same style as Qabas\u0101t and Q\u0101m\u016bs al-Rij\u0101l, without having to refer back to them.
    At this level, you should also study theoretical foundations of rij\u0101l in depth and with independent reasoning.
    Use Kulliy\u0101t by Subh\u0101n\u012b as your framework, but supplement it with Qabas\u0101t and the Introduction to Q\u0101m\u016bs al-Rij\u0101l.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Mastery of Isn\u0101d Analysis
      Once you reach an ijtih\u0101d-level understanding of individual narrators and principles, move on to deep familiarity with isn\u0101ds (chains) themselves.
      You should be able to detect textual errors or copyist distortions in chains.
      Use As\u0101n\u012bd Mushkilah by Sayyid Jaw\u0101d Shubayr\u012b as a model to master the recognition of transcriptional errors and irregularities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Advanced Correction of Corrupted Chains
      Finally, note that many Sunni-origin chains found within Sh\u012b\u2018\u012b hadith collections suffer from structural flaws.
      To learn how to correct and evaluate such isn\u0101ds, carefully study Ta\u1e63\u1e25\u012b\u1e25 Tur\u0101thin\u0101 al-Rij\u0101l\u012b.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      After passing through these seven stages, you must continue to study, review, and revisit sources constantly \u2014 gradually raising your level until you reach ijtih\u0101d (scholarly independence) in the science of rij\u0101l.[6]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. I read the texts as well, although this slowed down the process, but I couldn’t spend time flicking pages of a hadith book and not at least skim the content. Though for the sake of establishing familiarity immediate with chains, his suggestion makes more sense.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. I used Usul al-Kafi mainly. Wasail makes more sense because of Fiqhi reports plus reports from all main 4 books, but chains of narration for Usul Kafi were more important to me.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      3. I ended up making a Google Doc of the top 100 narrators (highest frequency in chains) with a small description of their veracity and generation, but I have been too lazy to finalise and publish it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      4. I recommend starting with Sh al-Irawani’s Durus Tamhidiyah, its more concise and achieves this goal faster and better. You can read Sh Subhani’s after this. Nowadays, there is al-Istin\u0101d of Sayyid Shubayri, which is more than just Rij\u0101l, so I wouldn’t want that to be my first introduction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      5. I love this book. Its one volume, A3 size, with a concise description of all narrators. You can find it online.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
